Carbon Copy
To save the earth will surely take some drastic measures.

Story

Carbon Copy
Leaders must behave as though the entire world is watching and following.
Shortly before we left the US, we bought a copy of Thomas Friedman’s book, Hot, Flat and Crowded. It was perfect reading ahead of the 2008 presidential election. We were filled with cautious hope for the future, and an almost overwhelming sense of the challenges for the planet and mankind, its most recently endangered species.

American flag

As Americans, we have enjoyed years of growth and prosperity. Our country has led the world in innovation. We’ve been such obvious leaders that we now serve as the model for many countries and cultures. Yet we have only begun to understand the cost of our material progress. The rest of the world has little time to exploit its resources, as we have done. And, as much as the world may want to emulate the American lifestyle, it cannot safely follow our path. We must find clean, green alternatives to sustain our future growth.

Friedman’s book offers disturbing statistics regarding the world’s burden of overpopulation, and the alarming trend toward global warming. The enormous carbon footprint that supports our insatiable appetites has brought us to the brink of disaster.

We asked ourselves how we could help. We resolved to act, and the next morning we decided to tell the story in narrative, music, and art—our own way of speaking in the world. Countless carbon footprints can only be diminished step by step. As Friedman puts it, “We have just enough time, beginning right now!”
