Common Ground Previous Story
We meet in the middle to discover surprising similarities.
Family resemblance.
“You look just like my Grandma—I think you must be twins! You look alike, you sound alike, you even make your mouth go the same way!” Rosie finishes her frenzied dance with a mid-air leap and clings to the wooden column in the kitchen at Millstone Farm.
When my sister and I gasp at her daring, our similar expressions evoke Rosie’s comment. Yes, we do look a lot alike. To Rosie’s uncluttered view of the world, it’s obvious.
I had arrived to surprise Mom on her seventy-eighth birthday, and to wish her well in her first radiation treatment. It felt like a family reunion, with hugs and endless questions. And, like most families, we fell into old ways of being together, quickly picking up the longstanding rhythms and routines as our time-accumulated differences fell away.

Rosie’s point was well taken. My sister and I drove those long country roads together many times over the weekend. As we rode, talked and shared thoughts and feelings, the similarities and family resemblances emerged. With each new open conversation, we uncovered more common ground.
