Down to Me Previous Story
Rather than new directions, sometimes we merely need a reflective pause to catch our breath.
Travelers on opposite sides of the world make their way toward the same place. We wend our way home after the exhausting, exhilarating meeting, while, serendipitously, our daughter returns home after her trying first year at college. Her situation and ours have held frustration, but also relief and the hope of a different future. Together, we are experiencing similar moods though miles apart.

On the airplane, she writes a poem about her experiences during the last year. It speaks of her frustrations and contrasts them with her personal calm—and the awareness of endless time captured in the vast blue skies over Colorado. In her poem, there is intensity and energy that turns and twists toward resolution. When we read the poem, we heard our own sentiments. The tone and rhythm of her words felt like the music we’d written just the day before. We wrote music without words, and she wrote words without music. To our amazement, the pieces fit together as if written by a single hand, one heart.
This song has given us a way to remember those times of emotional intensity. It summons in us the call to take action in the midst of turmoil, and be accountable. Even amid the most difficult situations, we know that we have the inner wisdom and strength that will pull us through. We must remember to take care of ourselves, to accept who we are, and to strive to learn and grow in every situation. In the midst of challenge, clear vision is critical. The only factors that we have control over are our unique perspective, and our sense of personal responsibility.
