Elegy Previous Story
Unrealized dreams wash away with the rain.
A middle-aged man stands at the window, staring at the drab-brown building across the way, his blank gaze interrupted by a blur of rain that streaks the window. His thoughts are of himself, his loneliness, his unhappiness.
Behind him is a grand piano. In his memory, he plays for her—the once-enchanting melody that has become a sad remembrance, a lament for his lost love. He perceives himself as a silhouette, a hollowed-out, lifeless form.

Months earlier, they imagined jaunts to Europe, and long walks on the beach. Conversation was easy, the chatter of lovers getting to know each other, omitting difficulties and leaving much unsaid.
But then it stopped. Myriad memories and imaginings now settle like dust, floating to rest on the surfaces of the room, on his treasured belongings. He is overcome by his fears, his anxieties about commitment, aging, and living up to expectations. He feels a deep remorse for decisions and actions taken long ago.
What is it that silently drains our confidence and weakens us, even as we are poised to fulfill our desires? What is it that sabotages our greatest possibilities?
The memory of the sweet, alluring piano tune pierces the silence. But, no matter how lovely the song or sincere the lament, that which has passed cannot be recovered or reconstructed. Unrealized dreams wash away with the rain.
