Family Ties Previous Story
Shared moments underscore the meaning of family and friends.
We sneak a glance out the front window every few minutes, anticipating their long-awaited arrival. Once or maybe twice a year, we meet to reconnect and fan the flames of family and friendship around a stone hearth and dinner tables that invite conversation.
Over the following days, our verbal exchanges are both playful and serious as we open our hearts to carefully disclose ideas and values that matter. In the midst of ordinary interactions, we deal with the most important family business of bridging gaps, making meanings, caring for the details of each other’s lives, and creating lasting ties.

Our visit comes to a close, and we wave goodbye. They disappear down the road, making their way home after another heartfelt time together. Left in silence, we immediately begin to recount new stories—the snapshot memories they’ve left behind. We realize that in our relationships, whether as friends or family, we are bound tightly by these shared experiences. Like pieces of rope wound around each other, knotted, tied, looped and linked, we are held together. Our family ties comprise a universe of connections—a grand, expansive world of small and simple interactions. The ongoing work of building relationships is cumulative. It gathers over many years through countless acts and conversations—a project of immense proportions.
Connected in unseen ways, we are mysteriously drawn together to honor the family ties that bind.
