Finally Friends Previous Story
Heartfelt conversation begins the healing process.
Another holiday with family, and another retelling of the old negative stories we’ve made up about each other. How much of our precious time together is lost in quarrels, harsh words, and misunderstandings.
We recall our original closeness as kids at play. In our childhood backyard games, the stakes weren’t as high or demanding. Perhaps there was more forgiveness, and a desire to create common ground, to accept each other at face value. Such simplicity. Yes, we had disagreements, petty skirmishes, and sometimes even fights, but we were willing to let go of our opinions in our enthusiasm for an impending game of Red Rover or kickball.

Brother and sister scheming
How did we create the painful shift from happy play to scuttled holiday togetherness? And—for goodness’ sake—why?
Then, one day, healing arrives. Something opens and allows us to release our unyielding disruptive opinions. In flashes of memory, we remember the funny or endearing qualities we liked about each other as children. And, within moments, our hearts soften. Feelings flow again, in a mysterious healing process, and a heartfelt conversation begins. Now, why was it exactly that we couldn’t get along? No explanation is needed; it’s sufficient that we are relieved and happy to feel our connections.
In matters of the heart, memory never fades. The true friendship that once flourished patiently awaits the right moment to emerge.
