Destinations are merely signposts to mark the path we're on.
Dawn crept over the neighborhood, morning air cool and icy as we adjusted our bicycles for our weekend ride, metal clanking, feet shuffling on the driveway. I smiled as we steadied our bikes and rolled over the curb and into the street, wondering which words would start the day’s conversation. Cold air whistled past my ears as the sun broke through the fog, warming us.
For these weekend rides we chose our destination carefully, wanting focus and a shared goal. Yet I remember the endpoint less vividly than the ride — the conversation, the wind on my face, the sound of wheels on pavement, the rest stops and people encountered along the way. What strikes me about those outings is their sheer simplicity, the process, the moments, each glance across a green field, every weathered fencepost, each shared thought—these were the destinations.
Watch us and wonder
I recall those rides like a bird on a wire, watching my life roll by. I’m slowly learning that destinations are only signposts along the way to somewhere else.
