Fitting Pieces
Random pieces wait to be pressed into their one and only destination.

Story

Fitting Pieces
We work our days like a jigsaw puzzle, piece by patient piece.
I slide my fingernail through the paper around the jigsaw puzzle box and pour the dusty pieces in a cascade onto the sunroom table. We spread the mountain into smaller hills, then begin to work.

When our family gets together, we huddle around the old oak table to puzzle. First we find the edges and corners, then we fill the center. Piece by piece, color by color, shape by shape, the forms come together and recognizable images appear. We enjoy watching the picture—humorous, scenic, or poignant—emerge from the jumbled pile.

Connecting part to part

Our days interlock to create the picture of our lives. We experience each day as separate, yet when we pull back we can see the connections. Each period has its own unique and subtle patterns.

Funny, we’d never expect a puzzle to work itself. Yet we sometimes expect our lives to fall into place, because it’s easier than trying our hand. We seem to be working our days as a jigsaw puzzle now, looking for matching colors and shapes, and piecing together the edges. As the picture takes shape, we discover patterns and sense of it all. With patience and careful attention, the pieces fit together, no longer scattered before us.
