In Thin Air Previous Story
Surrendering ego holds the promise of peace and harmony.
To begin our journey of self-discovery and reinvention, we traveled to Barcelona, a city that has held magic and inspiration for us for over thirty years. There, Antoni Gaudí designed a wonderful metaphor for life: a Catalan country church, which we adopted as a symbol and a starting point for the creation of our new life together.

Gaudí suspended strings from a board, attaching lead weights that formed natural curves, interconnected to portray the intricate web of relationships. Gravity gives the piece a form that is in perfect, natural harmony. He then photographed the web and, turning it upside down, rendered the exterior with colorful mosaics and rugged brown brick. The perimeter walls he pleated like accordion-folded paper for additional strength. Gaudí’s idea was to create from the inside-out, allowing forms to blossom and grow, with natural curves evolving into vivid patterns of broken glass and china.
What if we could live a life together that is natural and true, peaceful and in harmony, like this country church? we asked. We used the inverted process that attracted Gaudí, to imagine surrendering to our deeper, peaceful natures. Once we had relaxed into our own authentic selves, we could turn our lives upside-down and begin to render a new and unique relationship. In surrendering, we cease resisting and drop into thin air, supported by natural forces and the web of relationships. The broken pieces of our lives are then recycled and re-imagined into new and creative expressions. Just as the weights created graceful curves for Gaudí, then were turned upside down, we also have the possibility to invert our low points into soaring hopes. We find once again the indescribable thin air that takes our breath away.
With this metaphor for our roadmap, we made a commitment to begin the sacred journey together, guided by the two simple principles of surrendering and rendering. If we are patient and persistent, we will continue to build a partnership as beautiful as the humble country church in Spain.
