Inherit Previous Story
Our deeds are felt by more than seven generations.
My friend closed his book and cheerfully said, “Good morning! Let me tell you what I dreamed last night!”
I poured cereal in a bowl while I listened.
“I was elected to the presidency and was giving my acceptance speech. I was very enthusiastic, describing my clear plans for changes that were urgently needed. As I spoke to the nation, I held a small child in my arms.”
He talked nonstop, laying out his 10-point plan for helping people realize their dreams and full potential. He described a world teeming with success stories, where age-old barriers fell away, creating opportunity for everyone. His ideas were engaging, but my thoughts were riveted on the image of him holding a child.

When he’d finished his monologue, I said, “The image you described really grabbed me—of you holding a child while you gave your speech. Just think of the impact it would have!”
Our conversation shifted to possibilities. What if our leaders only spoke about what would matter to the children, and to the children’s children? What if they always carried a child, so they could never forget the overarching priorities? Could any leader look into a child’s eyes and risk its future? If his hypothetical world of sincere accountability became reality, what new promises would be made—and kept?
