Living Without Power Previous Story
Dependable power is always generated from within.
Resourceful. Practical.
Hurricane Ike leveled the Texas Coast and sent 80-mph winds into the Midwest, where they tore up the river valley where my brother lived. Ohio had seemed safely removed from the violence of the Gulf, yet the heartless wind streamed north unhindered and left him alone in the dark.

When the lights went out, there was a fleeting amusement and slight annoyance. But as the hours passed, unfamiliar feelings of discomfort set in, of scarcity intruding on comfortable habit.
Each day brought decisions: food, water, security, what to do with so much darkness? And a gnawing anger at the power company, that faceless provider of conveniences. The company’s new headquarters were located three states away in brightly lit North Carolina.
Through the days without relief, self-reliance gained momentum. He devised simple solutions to everyday problems, like pulling old coolers out of storage and finding working batteries for his flashlights. The new way of living took hold, and he began to enjoy the creative problem-solving and independence.
