Lost In Thought Previous Story
The quiet moments of our lives are cluttered with constant inner chatter.
How many of our todays are lost in thoughts of our yesterdays and tomorrows? We spend countless hours rehashing the past, as though we might magically change it and thereby change the present. We muse on the future, lacking a crystal ball or fortune-teller. Our “what-ifs” and “I-wonders” are just internal monologues. How tiresome.

Sometimes, in the still hours, we become aware of the steady drone, the hum, the ceaseless chatter. We listen intently, and upon closer examination recognize the familiar sound of our own thoughts. We spend hours thinking, rethinking, shifting, and fabricating stories—around realities that seldom actually exist. Yet we persist in the hope that thoughts and planning will validate our lives. What is so important to us—that it takes so much time and energy? We could spend an entire lifetime thinking, wondering, agitated and distracted, even as we feel the lack of substance.
Meanwhile, precious moments of ordinary days get pushed aside. The daily essence is covered in babble, piled-over with this crystal-ball lifestyle. Reading and conversation lead us deeper into our heads—aha! we are filled more than ever with conviction. How ironically harder it is to stay focused in the present. To live each day fully in the “now.” We must plan less. Think less. Rework less. As we embrace the possibility, we discover how hard it is to step aside from “headwork.” Yet when we succeed, we are magically transported to—to the present. It may be for a moment, but at such times we are lost no more. Could it be this simple?
