Make Believe Previous Story
We must teach ourselves how to engage in the mystery, and to believe in what we see.
“Star bright, star light, first star I’ve seen tonight.” And so the wish begins. What other tokens have we wished upon? Pennies, stars, and Christmas lists. “Close your eyes, now blow out the candles!” Wishbones and pots of gold. Do we really believe in such things? We’re drawn into the magic of their whimsical imagery. Grown-ups carry the same wishes and longings, of willing our lives into reality through our hopes and dreams. Plans and intentions strung in strands, wish fragments linked serially to create a life. We stubbornly persist in our dreams.
Moss-covered wishing well
But where do the wishes go, once uttered? Do they gather in a room somewhere, neatly stored and prioritized? Perhaps a wish is only an intention, unrealized. Make a wish! Imagine a future! Perhaps we’ve considered the same ideas many times. Speaking of possibilities—even quietly, to ourselves—activates them, and language creates reality. We dream our lives into life. These are not simple, childish ideas, or fanciful musings. Our wishes connect in meaningful ways. Perhaps our lives are make-believe, vision and desire in many packages—a shooting star, or a coin dropped longingly into a well.
