The old door creaks and clicks closed behind me. I sigh with relief and turn toward the massive country fireplace, built with stone pulled from the ground of this deep-woods retreat.

I cross the sagging floor to the hearth, kneel on the cupped stone, and lean into the dark to light a fire. Sparks flicker to smoke and slowly start a blaze. Drawing closer to the flames, I warm myself.



This modest rustic haven fills me with satisfaction and awe. Its earthy timeless simplicity, its dusty splintered walls, washed in a glow as soft light filters through old rippled window glass. I want to settle in and stay. This cabin feels like home. Its personality matches mine—the decades have worn us both to a satin patina. This place holds my secrets and memories—a sanctuary known only to me, where my soul is nourished. In a hidden clearing near the edge of the woods stands my humble cottage of logs, rock, and hand-forged steel, reminding me there is much work to do in silence. Here I shall begin.
