My Shoes Previous Story
The next step always starts from exactly where you stand.
My art teacher breaks the silence, “Look deeper into the shoes.” I squint to see the old boots more accurately. “Think about who wore them and where they walked. Notice how their feet softened the edges and wore the soles. Observe the pattern of reflections on the surface. Now, look deeply into one of those reflections and draw what you see there!” I bend over the table, the faint scratching of pencil on paper in my ears.

Art class changed how I see the world. I no longer stop at the surface, but look within—searching for patterns, obscure details, noting interesting features beneath the facade.
Decades have passed since Mr. Gale pushed me to see past the surface. I look down at my worn shoes and reflect on where they’ve taken me. I pick up a pencil and start drawing. I’m quickly absorbed in the details, rendering an image to the familiar soft scratching of lead on paper. I am overwhelmed with satisfaction.
After 35 years, my technique emerges with new vitality. I remember Mr. G’s instruction to peer into those well-worn boots and find their inner meaning. I shift perspective and look “inside” for the underlying story. The drawings are notations of discoveries made within.
