Never Sleep Previous Story
The only true story is the one we each write for ourselves.
A child listens intently as the fairy tale is told for the umpteenth time. The happy ending is just moments away. Predictably, there’s a hero, a villain, and an enchanted world. The characters are spun from fantasy—or are they? Are they not made for the culture in which they’re nested, to serve as models, maps, and messages for how things are supposed to be? We are encouraged to do as the fairy stories tell us: Be good. Go along. And if you fall asleep while the tale is being told, perhaps you can dream it into reality. The fairy tale is a beautiful story, but it isn’t personal. We’re supposed to let it lure us in, and soon we will be living in someone else’s dream.

We lived the American Dream for twenty years. We followed the rules, believed the promise, and drew near the end of the tale. Yet for all its possibilities, we weren’t satisfied with the story. The archetypical ending wasn’t our happy ending. We let ourselves fall asleep to our needs as individuals, and the story began to sound as if some pieces were missing. Soon we were looking for the lost passages and realizing that we had just one option that was true.
We decided to write our own story. At the mutual age of forty-eight, we left our jobs and set out to create a new relationship. Our starting point was simply . . . the beginning. Where else? We secluded ourselves so that our journey could begin. Within hours, a song appeared, born of excitement, conversation, and passion. The first evening, feeling excited, we wrote music and lyrics that reflected our ideas. We had never written music together, and it was a wonderful experience, one that we will never forget. We had pressed the heartfelt beginnings of our sacred journey into a single musical expression. We knew, that writing our own script would be part of our path together. We vowed never again to live someone else’s story.
