Story

Nothing Much to Say
Ah, to be left speechless.
I love to sit on a couch, feet tucked under, wrapped to the chin in a handmade quilt, and read the poetry of Robert Bly. It "speaks" to me on many levels and in ways that aren't necessarily apparent at the time. It seems to me that poets wrap words around the indescribable, conjuring meaning through feelings and moods. They evoke resonances of an essence beneath the surface of daily life. We rely on poets to point us toward the ineffable.

We read poetry because we long to learn secrets, to have our hearts stolen, our minds changed, and our lives reshaped. Poets find words to paint pictures of our innermost feelings and beliefs. They sense that there is more to life, aching to be articulated, than meets the eye.

Just can't seem to find the words

Although poets touch our hearts and souls with their words, in a unique manner, even they sometimes fall short in their attempts to capture the essence. On the verge of satisfaction, we sense a shortfall. Depicting life sometimes defies even their best efforts. They can express pieces of the endless human story, but can't fill our hearts or plumb our souls completely. Perhaps our lives are much too complex to describe. But what if they are really just too simple?

Falling into silence, with nothing left to say, we drift into the evocative space between the words where secrets hide.
