Numbered Days
Decades hurry by in a whirlwind.

Numbered Days
We count on every minute of our lives.
“Thirty days hath September, April, June, and November.”

We’ve all learned the handy rhyme that reminds us of the number of days in the month. Numbers creep into our lives. We love to count everything: phone numbers, Social Security numbers, PINs, customer numbers, account numbers. Numbers, numbers, numbers...twelve months, four weeks, seven days...

We mark birthdays with increasing numbers of candles, the milestones of growth and change. We mark progress and pencil-in dates on a calendar on the refrigerator door. We lament our children's fleeting youth, counting the years until they enter the dreaded stage of adolescent rebellion. How many days until graduation? Until project completion? Until the weather changes? Forever counting, silently or aloud, we pass on the habit to our children.

The age of treason

Then one day our counting turns upon us, and we begin subtracting. Now we’re counting down to the last of everything: friends lost, years left, time running out. Most heartbreaking of all is the sad reality of counting our last days.
