Only Miles Away Previous Story
Memories close the distance.
He closes his laptop with a sigh.
He has just read Chapter Two aloud. Tanned and fit, with his sandals and snowy long hair, he looks the part of a writer. He has taken a retreat, a quiet period of contemplation to write his life’s story.
His wife is working miles away. Sometimes he’s lonely, sometimes he’s on fire with inspiration. Tucked away in a seaside town, he documents his journey in deliberate words, capturing each moment in tones so clear, it might be happening today. With craftsmanly patience he channels essences hidden within.
As we begin our conversation we blink back tears. He quickly regains his usual composure, and begins talking about phrases he’ll need to revise. I can barely hear, I'm so caught by the imagery of his words, their sweetness and sting. In his story, I hear my own.
In this engaging reunion we find understanding. Gaps close inside and we “return home.” We all seek comfort and resolution. In these words, in this meeting, distances disappear and longing ceases.
