Rocking Chair Previous Story
Good-byes are final, whether anticipated or unexpected.
The chair creaks on the worn wood floor as it rocks back and forth in a soothing motion. Arms are rubbed bare from years of holding on. Hypnotic in its patient, ceaseless repetition, we are reminded of our own need for comfort and peace —relaxation and sleep.
It was clear to us that Emerson’s father could not continue much longer as he struggled to catch his breath. He had worked hard to recover, but was clearly at a point of desperation that was apparent to us all. Even though we were not geographically near, we thought of him often and called to check on his lingering condition. Day after day, he continued to struggle and survive, but we wondered how much longer he could possibly last.

We decided to send him energy in a song, our way of speaking over the distance between us. Mostly we wanted him to find peace and comfort. He had struggled, and persisted through the long hard fight, but perhaps long enough. He deserved a rest. We realized that it was ultimately up to his father to rock himself to sleep. We saw images of his own special chair, well worn by years of holding on to a wonderful life and many joys and blessings as we reflected on a life well lived. This song was written as a lullaby for a wonderful father, friend, and fellow traveler on this journey. Our prayer for him was to end his suffering and to find soothing comfort in his final days. As we finished the song, we received a call that he had passed away, at long last resting.
