Sand Castles Previous Story
We must hold risk and security in balance to gracefully walk Life's tightrope.
Walking on the beach, we see two children building a sand castle. Working with reckless abandon, they are focused only on the moment. They have spent the entire day hand-crafting their masterpiece, but the tide is rising. Soon their vulnerable creation will be washed into the sea. Maybe they will feel saddened by their loss, yet tomorrow they will begin again. We are struck by the significance of this endeavor: don’t we build fragile towers again and again? Wouldn’t it be better to build something more stable and lasting?

This is a story of the balance between playful freedom and limiting constraints. There is a point where we can grasp risk-taking effortlessly in one hand, while holding security in the other—dissimilar qualities, held in purposeful tension.
No longer children, we know it is time to change and grow once again, yet we can’t quite imagine how. The safety and security we felt in building solidly for the future seemed certain—mature—but we wonder if we have compromised the youthful naïveté that once empowered us. We sense that there is room for innocence and imagination on our journey. We challenge ourselves to hold the natural tension of the opposites, appreciating both—the perspective that experience creates along with a sense of wonder, at the same time. With patience and commitment we believe it is not only possible, but also necessary. The capacity to blend seemingly disparate realities makes us stronger, ready for the next adventure.
