Say When Previous Story
The most harmonious chords are often struck without sound.
“It’s a tear-down. The house is virtually worthless. In fact, the ground’s worth more without the house on it!”
“But it has such good bones!” we lamented. We were sure the house was historic, though it was hard to see past the changes it had undergone over the years. There were traces of fire in the kitchen, shingles with dry rot, chimneys that threatened to tumble, mysterious watermarks on the basement walls. The house had sat vacant for years.
After signing the papers, we walked slowly through the house, and the reality began to set in. Dollar signs taunted us from every corner, and we suspected that what we couldn’t see would be even more unsettling. We found a contractor who would work one step at a time. In the course of our endless conversations, Ed became our friend.
Every sledgehammer swing and crowbar pry revealed surprises that changed the direction of the “remodel.” Reviving the house became a metaphor for building and preserving relationships, as we learned about rapport and trust. There was a comfort in the shorthand that developed through our communications. Agreements were often made with a pat on the back, a handshake, a nod, or a knowing glance. Often, before we’d finished explaining our latest request, Ed would interrupt casually, Just say when.”
