Sea Change Previous Story
Lifted from one level to another, we are transformed.
The narrow road winds through the countryside of Scotland, its lulling rise and fall bringing views of often-breathtaking landscapes.
Emerging from dense pines, we round a curve and behold a stunning scene. There it is! The famous Falkirk Wheel, the channel lock that links the Forth and Clyde and Union Canals, an engineering wonder of immense proportions.

We take our seats in a boat in one of the giant wheel’s two arms. Massive gates emerge from beneath and seal the enormous tray of water that surrounds us. We watch in childlike anticipation as the wheel begins to turn and lift us from the lower basin—it’s like riding an enormous Ferris wheel. Within minutes we are eight stories higher, still in our boat, and delivered to the edge of the second dangling canal. The huge gates retract silently, and we float into a different world. From our new vantage point, we can see so much more—seemingly the whole of Scotland.
We imagine ourselves transformed, silently lifted up. Enchanting metaphors can be found in the most unlikely places.

Carried through locks, wheels and floodgates
