Skye's the Limit Previous Story
When in doubt, don't.
It’s a clear morning in Scotland, and the four of us climb in the car for a drive by the shores of Loch Lomond.
The scenery is spectacular, but the roads are narrow and difficult. Fog obscures our visibility for stretches, then lifts to reveal snowcapped ridges and hulking red cows.

After a light lunch at a charming hotel, we get back in the car and continue our drive. By mid-afternoon nightfall has arrived and navigating the roads is even more difficult.
We’d planned to spend two days seeking traces of family heritage near the island of Skye. But given the possibility of November snowfall, it could easily take four hours to make the drive on the poor roads.
In the morning I awake from fitful dreams. Vivid images of the intense drive to Skye appeared, sending a message that the trip wouldn’t be a good idea. Intuition collides with logic head-on.
I enter the kitchen and lament: “We need to talk.”
The morning air, abuzz with anticipation, now chills. But good friends listen with care, regardless of the message. In disbelief, I hear them say that simply being together is far more important than any destination. Within minutes the kitchen air is warm again with new directions.
