Sleeping Man Previous Story
Destiny is a patient companion.
Long ago, a young couple lived happily in the Apuane Mountains of Tuscany, between the villages of San Antonio d’Alpe and Piglionica.
Over the years, their relationship became strained, and finally she met another. With her new love she left the mountains for a different life. Her former lover, unable to live without her, persuaded himself that someday she would surely return. He imagined that their love would be rekindled, and that they would again live happily together.
So he waited, and waited. But she did not return. One night, weary of waiting, he lay down and fell into a deep sleep. His profile was silhouetted against the Tuscan sky, and all in that region have seen the sleeping man and learned of his story.
His profile remains to this day, inviting a closer look. Trekkers hike into the hills, stopping to rest at a rifugio built for the pilgrims. But why do they hike for hours to find the Sleeping Man? What does he represent for them? For us?
Some say that he is a symbol of destiny unfulfilled. Others, that he represents unending loyalty. Some consider him the protector of the surrounding towns. Some say he evokes empathy for universal human suffering.
The legend of the Sleeping Man was told to us in the tiny village of Colognora, where The Miracle of Santa Anna was filmed. In this intimate medieval hillside town, the legend is common knowledge, passed down through the generations. No matter which interpretation of the legend we choose to believe, the sleeping man’s timeless repose evokes a universal message that speaks to us all.
