Telling the Truth Previous Story
Before we deceive others, we first lie to ourselves.
“It was just a little white lie, just a fib.” That's a phrase I’ve heard my entire life, which I have to admit, became an acceptable part of being a nice person. Sometimes you just simply must tell a few white lies. How convenient! It is a wonderful invention that allows you to lie yet not be called a liar, and you alone are responsible for the definition. You can draw that line anywhere you want. So what does it really mean to be truthful, and what is the truth?

As we began this quest for a new kind of partnership, the truth became a very important element of our relationship, carrying great consequence. How could we possibly move to a radically different place without open, honest integrity with each other and within ourselves? The first person we always lie to is ourselves. We call it justification or rationalization, and it's easy to get all tangled up in it. So does this mean that we need to hold ourselves accountable for all that we make up in order to get our way? Does this mean that we have to disclose everything, and can’t even have our own secrets anymore? Does this mean that we need to be as congruent as humanly possible from the inside to the outside, and that we can’t continue living a double life, or double standard?
These were extremely challenging questions, and despite our resistance, we came to a conclusion about this new partnership. It was serious business, and it meant no more lying. We didn’t really like that answer, but after all, that is what a journey of the heart is all about—going someplace that is no longer comfortable. We now imagine a life where we get “caught always telling the truth.”
