The Cyclone Previous Story
There is always one more outrageous ride.
One of my youthful proving grounds was the Cyclone roller coaster at LeSourdsville Lake in southwestern Ohio. The elaborate structure was strong, but the peeling enamel and rippling gray wood beneath suggested danger.
Soaring and diving along the tracks of the 20-year old rollercoaster, my friends and I honed our courage, risk-taking spirit, and love of adventure. The roller coaster gave us an early zest for the freedom that comes by exploring personal edges. We encouraged each other, gathering strength from shared experience.

In the midsummer of our lives, how many outrageous rides can we remember? In sober maturity, we’re silently delighted to relive the excitement and reckless abandon.
Perhaps there’s time for one more ride?

Flying over the midway
I can hear the ratchety chain that pulled us toward the peak, feel the nervous anticipation of the fall, and the sudden overwhelming fear and excitement. Tired from tightly holding on, sore from bumping together on barely padded seats, our feet gratefully touched the ground, while our hearts began to yearn for the next adventure. Days later, we relived the screaming and groaning with delight. In the midsummer of our lives, how many outrageous rides can we remember? In sober maturity, we’re silently delighted to relive the excitement and reckless abandon.
