Thread of Life
In the eyes of a child we see who we are.

Story

Thread of Life
One life begins when another is done.
A chill wind blew on the piazza, signaling the end of a Tuscan fall. The leaves wore coats of gold and red, many already fallen, dormant in anticipation of another stunning spring.

A passing car slowed, stopped, and backed up. Our dear friend Matteo smiled broadly and in a flash was out of the car and hugging us. Between hugs, he danced and jumped up and down, so excited he could hardly contain his joy. His first child would be born any day. His exuberance was contagious. We danced and jumped with him, like school kids let out for recess. He promised to call us when the baby was born, and then he was off for home where his sweet wife Valentina waited. Together they would anticipate their baby’s arrival—the missing thread of their new life.

Life’s threads tightly wound

Over dinner we slipped into memories of our walks in the woods with Matteo’s mother and father, Paola and Pietro. Matteo was only a boy then, and it seemed impossible that now he would be a father. We had seen him grow up. It was warming to remember how, eight years ago, the whole family had opened its arms to welcome us, and help us in times of need. The loss of Matteo’s mother shortly after we met was an incredible shock, causing us to reel before the ever-present vulnerability and fragility of life. But we felt fortunate to be part of their lives, at least a few random strands. That thread continues to wind its way, tightly binding us. We are aware of its near-invisibility, yet deeply feel the patterns.

Three evenings later at 10:15 pm the phone rang. Paolo was born.
