Elegy

Elegy-LacingThe movie, Elegy (a song written for someone who has died), was playing at the Odeon Theater in Florence. We decided to go.

Consuela (Penelope Cruz) said to David (Ben Kingsley) that “what she missed the most in their relationship were the things they never did.”

Early the next morning, we completed the music, lyrics, and documented the harmony. It was spontaneous and one of the fastest songs we have ever written. It shows how inspiring and intense experiences like a concert or a movie can be. Magic simply happens around us when we are totally engaged, and moved to action.

Lyrics

I miss the way you looked as you walked toward me
I miss the way you laughed when I told you a story

Though I miss being together
And the times that we shared
Strangely, somehow what I miss most are
The things we didn’t do

We thought maybe we might dream together
Imagined chasing away fears and demons
But they became places we didn’t go

They just became places where we didn’t go

I miss the feeling that you could see through me
I miss the little things I thought had no meaning

Though I miss being together
And the times that we shared
Strangely, somehow what I miss most are
The things we didn’t do

And the things we didn’t say
The way we never were
