Different Cloth

Different-LacingChoices in our life have set us apart from everyone else, to the point that we began feeling quite alone in our decisions. Over dinner some years ago, we told a friend about our plans, describing the lifestyle and he said, “You know that this isn’t normative.” What he said that night has resonated with us and has found its way into many late night conversations.

The song helped us clarify some obvious and more obscure differences, accepting them as part of who we were and who we had decided to become. At the same time, we imagined that everyone must have those same feelings at times, about being somewhat “outside”—different in some significant way.

Lyrics

Watching people I have seen that
There are two certain ways to live
Those who settle rather simply
Into the daily take and give

But then there are others who never quite fit in
It seems to me, there are some who shatter every rule
It seems to me, there are those cut from a different cloth

Going down a different pathway
Seizing every chance that comes along
Never living only half-way
Reaching for the brass ring and beyond
Sealing and embracing their fate
Hearing and singing their own song
Since they are cut from a different cloth

There are people quite content
True to the way they choose to live
Those who settle nice and easy
Into the daily take and give

But then there are some of us who never quite give in
It seems to me, sometimes we love bending all the rules
It seems there are those of us cut from a different cloth
Although wandering are never really lost
It seems to me, there are those cut from a different cloth
