Grace-LacingEm wrote this song when we were on our first independent European trip after leaving the corporate world. He had recently discovered an over-shirt that our son Aaron had left in the closet when he left for college. Em liked it a lot and took it on the trip, wearing it every chance he got. It seemed to represent grace and good luck on our journey. We became aware of how we “grace” each other’s lives with words and objects left behind—often without even knowing the positive impact.

If I wear your hat in the bright sunshine
Will it shade my blue-green eyes
Casting shadows across my face and down to my chin
Shading Gracefully

You give me everything I don’t have to ask
You recognize my face with and without the mask
With you as my guide wisdom whispers insights

If I wear your coat in the pouring rain
Will it keep my shoulders dry
Wrapping down and ‘round nearly touching the ground
Wrapping Gracefully

When I need someone, you are there for me
We are good to each other, for any reason
I can count on you, you can count on me
We are good for each other, in any season
Giving Gracefully

If I wear your shoes on my path each day
Will my steps be safe and sure
Taking me places I never imagined before now
Stepping Gracefully

All vision hope and fear you have heard them all
Seen each victory witnessed every fall
Yet you know what is real, when to think when to feel

If I wear my heart pinned upon my sleeve
Will you keep it safe from harm
Shielding by your hand
Guarding with your very own heart
My very own heart
Living Gracefully
Loving Gracefully
