Two Pilgrims

Two-LacingIn the winter of 1972 we set out to discover Europe. With a Eurail Pass in hand, we wound our way from cathedrals to castles to churches. One of those special churches was Le Corbusier’s Ronchamp Chapel, east of Paris, almost at the Swiss border.

It was late December and as we were walking up the hill it began to snow. The wind captured the snowflakes, swirling them all around us. The entire experience was like being in a snow globe. When we reached the hilltop Chapel, we were delighted to find ourselves alone together inside. The forms of the Chapel held us like a cocoon. It was one of those powerful shared experiences where memories lured us back after many years.

That was the first experience that began our emotional ties to Europe. We attribute Ronchamp, along with a few others, as the inspirations that urged us to return some 30 years later to pursue this dream.

Lyrics

Winter was white, the chapel was near
We sang our song for no one to hear
Good times were easy to find
But in that day we couldn’t stay
So we left it to our hearts
To remember
Two remember

Scarves beneath chins, gloves holding hands
Lost in a foggy cloistered romance
Pocket days stashed safely away
Pressed into time, placed out of mind
Yet still trusting in our hearts
To remember
Two remember

Those were the days that were filled with
Simple seeking, quiet questing, longing for paths unknown
Two lonely pilgrims
Together, yet on our own
Those times were ideal and common
Such innocent days

Now, thirty years have come and gone,
Barely a breath or time for our song
Memories revive suddenly
Once stashed away appear today
As we fall into our hearts
To remember
Two remember

Those were the days of two pilgrim
These are those days
