Down to Me

Down-LacingEm had recently announced his retirement, but still had obligations. One commitment was a business meeting in Ireland. We decided to make it our last fling, little side excursion of our own to Dublin. While staying in some amazing historic manor homes and castles, we were truly inspired. Em wrote the music, created to reflect that closing phase of his “corporate life.”

At the exact same time, Iris was returning to California after her freshman year of college. She shared a poem she had just written, reflecting her own transition at Boulder. Curiously enough, the words fit the melody we had just written in Ireland. Her lyrics seemed to capture the very sentiment about accountability that we were also feeling.

It all goes on forever
Yet it all just passes by
I forget all of the subtleties
Compared to the vast blue sky

So many fierce diversions
From what I really want to say
The more drawn out the silence, you see
No one is listening anyway

But I should unclench my fist
And try to enjoy it

I don’t know what to make of this
Or where I’m coming from
Which path to choose
Or which path I’m on now

I’m so used to confrontation
I can’t find peace of mind
So now I’m leaving this place
I’ll take what I can find

And what a crazy closeness
That drives me further away
I find comfort in reflection
And some maroon in all the gray

But I should unclench my fist
And try to enjoy it

’m on my way back home now
With real food and tranquility
This whole thing I’ve been living with
Is over so suddenly now

I must have clear vision
The hardest part to see
Is what kind of relationship
I have with me

It all comes down to me
It always comes right down to me
