Sidetracked Previous Story
A change in direction urges us to reconsider what really matters.
On a sunny, crisp morning we hopped a train to a small town with places we’d wanted to see for a long time.
Because the approaching weekend was a holiday, we’d planned an early return to beat the rush. We’d often carried out similar plans and therefore felt little concern—until we got sidetracked.
Not knowing how long we’d stay, we neglected to make reservations for our return. At the station, we were shocked to see the long line. A glance at the information board showed the next train departing in two minutes. Accepting our bad timing, we resolved to take the next one after—but the clerk told us the trains were all full because of the upcoming holiday. Sidetracked again.

We resigned ourselves to waiting at the station for three hours and taking the late train that brought us home near midnight. Sidetracked again.
The holiday meant that offices and shops were closed for several days. On Monday, we found ourselves doing Thursday’s, Friday’s and Saturday’s tasks. It was all a bit disorienting. Sidetracked again.
How is it that our cherished destinations become suddenly difficult, and appear impossible to get to and from, our firm intentions thwarted by circumstances. We're left wondering about how many times and ways we get sidetracked by our own doing—or perhaps it's not a sidetrack at all!
